Surfing – How Not To Drown While Surfing

J Edmond Souaid asked:

First, respect that the ocean is stronger than you are. The force of even an average swell is far greater than anyone can resist. That's why it carries you along. But when those get to a certain point, they'll carry you down. Don't go surfing when the conditions are greater than you can handle. Don't push the limits until you're very experienced.

Next, be aware of the ever changing patterns in the water. Riptides can appear seemingly out of nowhere. Sometimes they're just an inconvenience, dragging you down the beach away from the spot on shore you want to reach. But, those surface currents can also drag you out to sea, especially if you're fatigued. Stay strong and get out of a rip current as soon as you sense it.

They're not difficult to spot if you're alert. They appear as calm flows, usually as a strip or channel within surrounding turbulent water. The color will often appear slightly different. They don't drag you under, but they can put you far enough out that you can't return to shore. Then you tire before reaching safety and go under. Swim or paddle parallel to the shore until you're out of it, then return to shore if you're tired.

Undertow is similar, but in this case the water flow is under the surface. When you're on your board that's not usually a problem. But if you fall, you'll often go far enough to reach it, and it can drag you down further and away from the shore. Again, try to swim parallel, at the same time rising to reach the surface. Swimming directly up makes it harder to reach the surface.

One of the more likely problems that can lead to drowning while surfing is being hit with your board.

Even the most advanced surfers fall of their surfboards at some time. It's difficult, but necessary, to be alert when you're on the way into the water. Try to note which way your board is moving. When you return to the surface, don't assume your board has floated away. The board is almost as likely to move back toward you as away from you. That's convenient, but dangerous.

If you use an ankle leash your surfboard can't move far away. That means you can be the cause of it hitting you if you don't move the right way. Practice in a swimming pool to get used to manipulating your leg and the board to grab the board before it hits you in the head. Being knocked unconscious by a surfboard is easy and, as you're often reminded, you can drown in a foot of water.

Develop into a strong swimmer, watch the ocean and stay alert. Your odds of drowning will be very low.

Also, make sure you have the right sun protection swimwear gear, to be protected again the sun UV radiation and its damaging effect on your skin.

Surfboard Stores

Groshan Fabiola asked:

Beginners looking to buy their first surfboard should buy it from a surfboard shop. The advantage of this is that beginners can get the advice of the owners of the surfboard shop in choosing their first board.

There are several surfboards out there that beginners can choose from. As each surfboard serves a different purpose and offers different experience beginners will do well to discuss the kind of surfboard that they want to buy with a surfboard shop owners. In San Diego there are several surf board stores. Most of the owners and managers of these stores are surfing pros.

Surfers who are looking to buy surf boards can search for surfboard shop through the Yellow Pages and on the Internet. However, most surf board shops become popular by word of mouth. So, it’s probably best to ask around and find out which surfboard shop is offering the best deals.

For surfing enthusiasts, a surf board shop is much more then a place to buy a board. The surf board shop is a community. Here surfers meet to discuss surfing conditions, surfing competitions and the latest in surf boards. Often, a surf board shop will organize an event so that surfers can meet and discuss the latest in surfing.

A surf board shop is also a great place to find surfing accessories. Every surfboard shop stocks wet suits and flippers as well as other surfing accessories such as T-shirts, pendants and posters. Some owners of surf board shops also create surfing videos.

As most owners at surf board shops are enthusiastic and experienced surfers they can offer good advise on the different designs of surf boards available. This is especially valuable to a beginner surfer who is not sure which surfboard design to choose.

Some surfers prefer to buy their boards from online stores because they offer better deals and discounts. However, this is most advantageous for experienced surfers who know what they are looking for.

The advantage of purchasing from an online surfboard shop is that sometimes the deals can be fantastic. In addition, most online surfboard shops deliver to all States at a flat rate. Some surf board shops offer guarantees on delivering the surf board damage free to the surfers door step.

Some online surfboard shops offer classes for beginning surfers. However, to reserve a place in the class, a surfboard shop may insist that a surfer make a reservation at least 24 hours before the scheduled start of the class.

A surfboard shop is the best place for beginner surfer to shop from. Experienced surfers managing the store can help surfers choose the best boards.

Surfing – How to Catch and Ride a Wave

Monday, March 29th, 2010
surfboard
J Edmond Souaid asked:

Wait! Be sure you choose well. The waves you want are not too large and not too small.

Too small and they won't have enough power to carry you into the shore. It will be harder to stay upright on the board if your speed is too low. This paradox is easily understood. Think of riding a bicycle. It's easy to remain upright when pedaling, very hard when you are traveling too slowly.

A wave that is too large for your skill level and, at some point, that's true of everyone will push you off the board. Waves roughly 3-4 feet high (1-1.5 m) are about right for most beginners. Those who have a little more natural good balance can go a little higher, sooner.

Now that you've chosen the wave, lie on the board facing shore and start paddling, hard. Use a crawl stroke, left arm, right arm, left arm again. Never both at once. Build up as much momentum as possible, looking over your shoulder from time to time to judge the wave speed and direction.

You want to catch the wave when the swell just starts to lift you up. At the critical moment, execute the pop-up. A pop-up is the movement from the lying to the crouching position. As you start to stand, the board will move down into the water slightly. Try to keep the nose slightly higher than the tail in order to avoid it going down and under the water, and you with it.

As you hit your feet, your force will press the board down. Keep more weight on the rear than the front and allow the buoyancy of the board to lift you back up to the surface. Stay balanced near the midpoint of the board and focus your eyes ahead, not down. If you watch your feet, you'll fall.

Hey, you're surfing! Now get ready to ride.

Keep your eyes focused in the direction you want to go and swivel your hips gradually to cause your feet and weight to follow. That pushes your rail (the outer edge of the surfboard) down at the correct angle.

Lean your weight slightly in the direction you want to travel. Dipping the surfboard at a shallow angle will generate a reaction force that moves you in the direction you want to go. Take care not to make it steep or you'll tend to rotate. If you turn at too great an angle, you're much more likely to fall off. Not good.

Aim for riding down the face of the wave. For the relatively short waves that are right for a beginner this is pretty much like riding near the crest. Save the curl riding for later, when you have more experience. It will give you something to aim for.

Last but not least, always wear sun protection swimwear and a sun hat when going out surfing.

Beach Theme Rugs to Accent Your Tropical Decor

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

Rebecca McKeich asked:

What better way to bring together your home's beach decor than with a coastal or tropical theme area rug? Often overlooked, floor coverings are a unique and fun way to accentuate your beach house style. These rugs come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors to suit any room in your house.

When shopping for an area rug, there are several factors to take into consideration to make sure you find the perfect choice. Style, color and shape all play a crucial part in making sure your rug blends seamlessly with your beach decor. There are so many options that, with a little research, you will be sure to find something ideal to fit your needs.

Think about the room that you are decorating? What is the main concept? Do you want your room to have the feel of a surfer's sanctuary? A tropical paradise? A coastal cottage? Your last family beach vacation? The options are limitless!

For a room with cool, laid-back surfer style, consider the ever-popular surfboard rug. Available in different sizes ("longboard" or "shortboard"), colors and patterns, these rugs could become the centerpiece of your room. If you prefer something a little more traditional, shape-wise, you can choose from plenty of rectangular-shaped surf theme area rugs.

Do you prefer your decor to have a more subdued, coastal feel? Highlight your floors with casual rugs in patterns of seashells or nautical stripes. Pair these rugs with white walls, light furniture and breezy window treatments to make your home feel like a cottage by the shore.

Depending on your taste, the color of your rugs can range from bright and splashy to understated and sophisticated, all while still maintaining your beach decor theme. Choose from vibrant floral patterns in rich reds, blues and greens for that island feeling. For a seaside retreat, choose more muted shades of aqua and tan reminiscent of sandy beaches and clear blue waters.

Area rugs are now available in all shapes and sizes. Smaller rugs are great in the bathroom or even as welcome mats at the front door. Larger rugs can be used to bring the furnishings and other accents in bigger rooms together, such as the dining room or living room. Long surfboard rugs can be used as hallway runners, and whimsical odd-shaped rugs can be a conversation piece all on their own!

So many elements go into interior design and floor coverings play an important role. You can find a great rug to match your current beach decor, or choose your rug first and then pattern your room around it. No matter what order you go in when you are decorating your beach house, remember not to leave out what's right under your feet!

Affordable Holidays: How to Do it Cheap on the Gold Coast

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

Damian Papworth asked:

You are probably aware by now that we are entering a period where cash is a going to be a little bit tighter for all of us. With record high oil prices, we are paying more and more for the petrol we need in our cars. With inflation on the rise, we spend more for the day to day necessities of life. And with both interest rates and rental prices increasing, no matter if you own or rent your home, you will be paying more for it this year, than you were last year. Something has to give.

Often, the annual holiday/vacation is the first thing we let go of when our financial situation gets tougher. A holiday is often one big expense. Skipping it can make the rest of the year a little bit easier to bare. WRONG. Skipping your annual holiday will make the rest of your year much harder to bare. You will get to the end of the year thinking you just survived. And that is all. You are not here on this earth to survive, you are here to live.

You need something to look forward to, to enjoy, to reward yourself with for a year of hard work. You also need some time away to recharge your batteries, for what will be another year of hard work. Your annual holiday is one of the necessities of life. It is not a luxury. In fact, when times get tough, experiences like your holiday become all the more important. This is when you really need them, as this is the time you really need to take the edge off.

That being said, you do not need to spend a million bucks to have a relaxing, invigorating holiday. In this article, we will show you how you can find alternative methods of planning your next holiday that will strip hundreds of dollars off its cost, while ensuring you enjoy precisely the level relaxation, fun and adventure you need to face another year.

Getting there: There are a number of alternatives you an look at, which will make the cost of flying to your destination not as expensive as you think. Here are some of the options:

Reward Programs - If you are not a member of flight reward programs, you should be. Make sure you are a member of frequent flyer reward programs and credit card reward programs. Now is the time to transfer your credit card points to your frequent flyer program, cash them in and get your free flight. This alone will save you hundreds of dollars, just when you need it

Discount Carriers - Don't fly full service airlines. Stick to the discount carriers, and sign up to all their email newsletters. You'll be amazed at the deals they have

Use a flights comparison service. We have one set up on our website for your convenience: Airline Reservation Search Engine. These comparison services will find the cheapest flights currently available, for the dates you want to fly. It will take the hassle out of the search for you and get you the best prices.

Staying there: Similar alternatives exist with accommodation. Remember too, the hotels know people cannot afford expensive holidays at the moment. They are discounting like crazy!

Reward programs - While not as well known, many hotels chains and booking services have reward programs. If you are a member of any of these, use your points now. If not, sign up to accumulate points for next time.

Hotel comparison services. Similar to our airline comparison services, we have set up one for hotels on our website for your convenience. These search engines will find you the best deal for your class of accommodation. Accommodation Comparison Service

Consider other alternatives. You do not have to stay in a hotel. Backpacker hostels are an option always worth considering, especially if you like a "community" experience. If you like more privacy though, think about caravan parks, holiday apartments or B&Bs. These often provide cheaper alternatives.

While there: One of the great things about the Gold Coast are our surf beaches. Once you get here, you can entertain yourself for your whole holiday, without spending a single cent. All you need is a towel and a pair of bathers, so you can take your self to the beach and spend your holiday body surfing, swimming (always between the flags) and tanning. If you would like a bit more adventure, try our surfboard rental service. Most hire shops charge you an arm and a leg to rent a surfboard as they charge you hourly or daily rates. Our holiday length rental rates though make surfboard hire very affordable.

Away from the beach, there are a myriad of other cheap entertainment opportunities which with a little bit of forethought and planning, you can take maximum advantage of. From local markets and sporting events, to the semi regular and free, music and art festivals which continually draw crowds to Australia's east coast. If you enjoy the nightlife while on holiday, try the Surf Life Saving Clubs rather than the clubs and bars. You'll find the drinks are much cheaper, you'll still have a great night, and you'll help fund the great institution that is Surf Life Saving Australia.

All it takes is a little thought and clever planning and you can still enjoy your annual Gold Coast Holiday, even on a shoe string

Sex Wax Behind Surfers Suffering

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Catherine Harvey asked:

Jarrod needed some sex wax. He asked his mum to pick some up for him in town and she slapped his face and told him to wash his mouth out! He asked his grandmother to pick some up for him when she was out shopping and she fainted! After coming round, she told Jarrod's mother, who promptly slapped his face and told him to wash his mouth out.

'I need sex wax' is all Jarrod's dad overheard while he was on the phone to his mate, organising their surfboard titillating session. Forcefully removing the phone from Jarrod's hand, his dad slammed it down, muttering, red-faced, about extortionate chat line charges and the 'youth of today', before he marched into the kitchen loudly complaining to his wife.

And guess what? Yep, you got it. She slapped his face and told him to wash his mouth out!

That was it. Jarrod had had enough. He left for the beach to meet his mate and get this out of his system. Strapping his surfboard to the roof of his beloved VW camper, he set off to catch some waves. The wind was picking up which was a good sign that his surfboard would see some action today. It also meant that his other cheek would get some colour and he wouldn't look like he'd fallen asleep under a one sided sun bed.

Arriving at the beach, Jarrod's mate has already arrived and was looking chilly while he wiped down his surfboard. Jarrod pulled on his 3mm wetsuit and checked out the surf. The weather has brought out more babes than usual, all desperate to strut their stuff and show the boys they ride their surfboards as well as us. All be it in a girlie fashion!

Not wanting to make himself look a complete idiot, he slapped plenty of his mates sex wax onto his surfboard and headed out into the waves. There's no way he was slipping off this board and making a fool of himself in front of these hotties.

Once out into the water, feeling the pull of the current around his legs and the exhilarating power under his surfboard, Jarrod soon forget all about his difficulties at home and began to ride the waves. Getting the better of a wave and riding it into shore gave him the ultimate feeling of control and of beating the elements. He wasn't, however, the type to take nature for granted. It has an unpredictable force all its own and should never be underestimated.

Unfortunately, this wasn't the attitude of the blonde totty riding nearby. Obviously inexperienced but determined to get the better of nature, she tackles waves that are way beyond her. After crashing down and being beaten by a particularly powerful surge, it feels like an age has gone by before she surfaces, coughing and spluttering.

Jarrod does the gentlemanly thing and helps her inland. He takes her arm and guides her to the back of his camper van where he patches up her grazes and offer her hot tea from a flask which she gratefully accepts. Doing his damndest not to patronise her, because he knows how sensitive you girls can be, he use his own mistakes as an example of how she can overcome the problem she experienced on her surfboard.

She seems to be taking this all very well until he offers her some of my mates sex wax and she gives him that look. 'It's ok' Jarrod tell her, 'we always share sex wax'. It's at this point that she slaps his face, tells him to wash his mouth out and marches off back to the waves, swinging her surfers hair behind her. Girls!!

Deep Inside Colombia- Crossing The Andes with a Surfboard

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Michael Connelly asked:

I'll never forget the look on the face of that Colombian campesino man. My wife just explained to him in Spanish that what I am holding under my arm is indeed a surfboard, despite the fact that we were standing in a Colombian village that was located somewhere in the middle of the Andes Mountains, hundreds of miles away from any ocean. After hearing this news the man made a joke about us getting bad directions. He then flashed a smile that revealed a mouth full of rotten teeth. Soon after that he shook his head, tucked his hands into the front pockets of his hand-woven Inca style poncho, turned, and moved on down the only street in his town. When the man reached the center of town a gust of wind swept down the street and blew the black fedora hat off his head. As I was watching him chase after it through a cloud of dust, I thought to myself; "I gotta' get to the ocean."

I was beginning to feel like a fish out of water. Surfers cannot stay away from the ocean for too long, or they start to "dry out". As I was standing on that dirt street in that dusty little town, I realized that I had not seen the ocean in over a month. More importantly, I had not surfed in it. Halfway through a two month excursion across the country of Colombia, in South America, we were on our way to a small Caribbean beach resort on the northeastern edge of the country for a much needed break from the madness we had experienced so far on that trip. We had spent the holidays traveling from Bogotá to Medellín, and then back to Bogotá again to meet and visit with various different members of my wife's family. There had been some mishaps along the way involving pick-pockets and miscreants. Up to that point it was not fun, and we will leave it at that.

Traveling on a tight budget in a foreign country is the best way to experience the true culture of that country, but it can be quite taxing on your soul. We could not afford plane tickets to fly all over the country, so we had to take busses and taxis instead. Some of those bus rides took over two days to reach our destination. We traveled through some of the most remote areas of Colombia, changing busses and hailing taxis the whole way. Along the way we saw some of the most beautiful scenery on earth, and experienced some very interesting, intense, and strange things. Black magic and evil curses are practiced in many areas of Colombia, and I cannot say any more on that subject, for fear that you would think of me as crazy. There are things that cannot be explained in this world, and a lot of them happen in Colombia.

There were other things that happened to us that were even more terrifying than black magic. Let's just say it's never a good thing to have your bus stopped in the middle of the night by rough looking men with machine guns on a winding, dark, mountainous road. That is whole other story for another time.

Back to our main story; we were about four hours North of Bucaramanga, and waiting to board yet another one of those colorful busses. All I could think about at that moment was surfing and relaxing at this place called Tayrona. I was told you can sit in your own thatched-hut "choza" and watch the waves from your front porch. For those who are not familiar with the sport of surfing, that sounds about as good as it gets for a surfer.

It had not been easy carrying that surfboard all over Colombia. We landed in Bogotá in the middle of the country a month before, and I had been schlepping it around with our other luggage from one bus or taxi to the other ever since. It was like I was living my own little version of the movie Fitzcaraldo, and my surfboard was the ship that was being carried for many miles across dry land. I was determined to make the effort pay off.

While we were waiting for our bus in that little mountain village we were inundated by the usual local people trying to sell us stuff. My wife, being a Colombian native did most of the talking for those negotiations. These little villages along the main roads of Colombia survive on money from people who are just passing through, or waiting for a bus. The local indigenous people sell everything from bags of purified water, to homemade "empanadas" (a meat and potato filled turnover made with corn-meal dough). My wife and I had been surviving on food and water provided by those people for most of our trip. Amazingly, neither of us had been sick yet. Albeit, most of this food had been delicious, you have to wonder about the cooking and cleaning practices in a town that has no running water. Something tells me that if the cook had a choice between using their last bucket of water to wash their hands before cooking, or having water to drink the next day, they'd forego the cleanliness. I tried not to think about stuff like that on that trip. I only thought about how much flavor those homemade items had with their homegrown ingredients.

People sure know how to cook in Colombia. Wow! The food in that country just seemed to have a lot more flavor than the food I was used to in the United States. We really experienced the authentic food of Colombia; "buñuelos, "pandebonos", "arepas", you name it and we tried it along the way. We were on a budget, yet eating very good food. The people who made this food were as poor as one could be, but they could make food like no-one else on earth. The freshness, lack of pesticides, and the nutrient-rich soils also have a lot to do with why the food tastes so good in Colombia.

After we ate our share of "empanadas" that we purchased from a little old village woman carrying a hand-woven basket, we were ready for a freshly blended fruit smoothie. There were always several of these little smoothie stands in every town that we stopped at along the way, and we always made sure that we sampled at least one. No matter how small of a stand, the vender always had electricity to run their blender, ice box, and boom-box. I immediately ordered a couple of "tomate de árbol "smoothies at a nearby stand, and then we sat down on an old wooden bench provided by the smoothie vendor.

We were told by the driver of the last bus that our next bus should be along in "no time at all". It had been my experience up to that point that this bus driver may, or may not be right. Sometimes the bus came right away and the transfer went smoothly. Other times we ended up waiting long periods of time between transfers. Those ones did not go so smoothly.

The mountain roads and leftist guerilla laden areas that these busses travel through can cause long delays, to say the least. Hanging out in that small town in the middle of nowhere in the foothills of the Andes Mountains waiting for a bus was quite nerve-racking. The local people of those types of towns were always very suspicious of anyone that stayed behind after a bus came through. Most people just passed right through. They were especially suspicious of a Gringo with a surfboard and a Colombian wife. There was a war going on in that country. Everywhere we went everyone wanted to know whose side we were on. As we were sitting in that dusty, one-horse town in a remote area of Colombia, I knew we were in for a long, harrowing wait.

Surfboard or Botox. What Really Keep You Looking Young?

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010
surfboard
Me-Shell Mijangos asked:

"How old would you be if you didn't know how old you are?" Forget about Botox and face lifts! The best way to appear youthful is to feel youthful.

Pack up your lethargy, fatigue and weariness. Put them in the suitcase with your bikini and sunscreen. When your surfing vacation is over, the bikini will probably be faded. You, however, will be looking and feeling years younger. Your fatigue will be a thing of the past. You will have a spring in your step and a zest for life that you had thought long gone.

Pack away those "old lady" hobbies. Unearth your bikini, sunscreen and surf wax. Join a sporting craze that unites everyone of all age groups, from tiny children to the elderly.

There is nothing more aging than a woman with the weight of the world on her shoulders. Go on a women surfer's vacation and rejuvenate yourself. The sport of surfing will have you energised and looking and feeling more youthful in no time.

Feel your responsibilities and burdens start to slide away after the invigorating surfing sessions in the glorious ocean. There can be nothing more rejuvenating than splashing around in the crystal water waiting for that next wave. The feeling of successfully sliding down the face of the wave is just the best in the world. Every surfer comes out of the water after a session with a big grin on her face. Your endorphins (those feel good hormones produced by exercise) will be pumping.

The extra exercise will have the blood pumping around your body, resulting in a beautiful healthy glow to your skin. Allow your true beauty to shine from within. Those endorphins will take years off your face. A truly happy and contented woman has a much more youthful appearance. Just look around your own friends and colleagues to see living evidence of this.

Enjoying time in the great outdoors is a fine way to stay young at heart. However, while out there surfing it is important to remember to apply your sunscreen. Organic ones are best as they contain less harmful chemicals, and often have added natural moisturizers in them. There is no point going on a surfing vacation and frying your skin. You do not want to come home with wrinkles or a bad case of sunburn as your holiday souvenir.

Another great piece of advice to halt the aging process is to indulge in your surfing in the less damaging times of the sun. Have you heard the phrase "10-3, beneath a tree"? Use the middle of the day for resting, shopping and massages. Smart women surfer's hit the waves first thing in the morning, before the wind comes up, and in the late afternoon. The late afternoon surfing session can be a great way to banish the frustrations of the day.

Catching a little sun through the sunscreen is an excellent way to help halt the process of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a nasty part of aging for all females involving the loss of the calcium in the bones, resulting in more fragile bones. "Dowager's humps" are an excellent example of osteoporosis in its more dramatic form. The calcium that you consume during the day actually needs the Vitamin D from the sun to be metabolized into a substance your body can utilize. Another great reason to start surfing and turn back the hands of time.

The physical activity of the surfing will have your upper arms toned in no time. Your whole body will be more supple and youthful looking. Use muscles that have been almost forgotten. Surfing is a great form of exercise for burning off any excess pounds. Which would you rather, the sweaty Stairmaster and the arm weights, or a glorious session in the crystal water with the waves?

There is nothing quite like the fresh ocean air to dispel all sad and negative thoughts. It is actually extremely difficult to remain depressed when on the beach. In fact, many people claim that the seaside is a cheaper and more effective alternative to therapy.

Why go on a plastic surgery holiday? Go on a women surfer's vacation instead. Learn, or perfect, a new sport and come home looking and feeling years younger. Return home from your vacation with extra life experience in your soul, not as a blank canvas with all life erased. Go home smiling, not with a paralyzed face full of toxic nasties.

Your job, your partner, your children and the housework can all wait. Leave the aging burdens of the daily grind at home. Reinvigorate yourself now. Botox or a surfboard? The answer to a more youthful appearance is obvious. Say "No" to injecting chemicals into your body. Say "Yes" to organic sunscreen, waves and surfboards.

Sunscreen, a bikini, a surfboard. Answer the call. Feel younger. Look younger. Surfing. The natural and healthy way to take 10 years off your face.

Skateboarding and Its Culture

Jay asked:

Skateboarding has been a popular sport for the past 3 decades, and is quite modern. In fact, skateboarding has been around since 1980, which happens to be the year in which the first modern skateboard was made. Since then, both young and the not so young enjoy carving the streets and experiencing the adrenaline rush of free riding, trick skating, and the like.

Skateboarding is deeply influenced by and derivative of the art and sport of surfing. Surfing, which was developed and rooted in Hawaii, is the act of riding waves with a surfboard. Similar to surfing, skateboarding entails riding a skateboard on land, and more specifically, paved or concrete surfaces. Skateboards are made in different styles and made with different skating methods in mind.

Some skateboards are styled and fashioned after longboard surfboards. While these skateboards are not intended for extensive tricks, longboard skateboards are great for bombing hills and carving while you cruise the streets.

There are also skateboards that are intended for trick skating. These skateboards are shorter boards which allow the skater to manipulate movement more quickly and effectively to perform stunts and tricks such ollies, casper flips, nosegrinds, and back stabs.

Skateboarding has been popular since the 1980's, as was mentioned in the early part of this article, and has then spawned its own culture. The skateboard culture is also known as punk or skate punk culture. Skate punk culture, like many different cultures, has a fashion and language of its own.

There are many brands and companies of manufacturers of skateboards and skateboard-related items. With the popularization of skateboarding and the image that it entails, also came the monetization and financial aspect of this sport. There are numerous skating contest events, skateboarding magazines, and skateboard fashion and clothing companies. Some of these companies include Element skateboards, Sector 9 skateboards, Birdhouse skateboards, Baker skateboards, the classic Powell skateboards, and many more. Usually, each skateboard brand has a team of sponsored professional skateboarders that represent them at skateboarding events.

Great Tips on How to Skurf

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Robert asked:

in a surface water sport that started in the mid eighties by a surfer named Tony Finn. With this sport the participant is towed behind a boat on a surfboard with a ski rope. Skurfing is most popular in Australia as well as some spots around the world, however it hasn't become increasing popular in the United States yet.

While skurfing is similar to other towed water sports it has no official competitions and isn't listed as a professional sport. When it comes to individuals who do this form of water sport it is very freestyle with a wide variety of individual styles and forms. The entire sport is more about personal style than have a defined set of conventions.

It is believed the skurfing is the precursor to the more popular wakeboarding. Skurfing can be done one of two ways. The first is nose riding which is used by those on a long board. The other style is with cutbacks, carves and turns which allows people to get air over a wake.

Recently a new style of skurfing was developed in which the fins were removed from the bottom of the surfboard. Those who try this option need to have more balance and finesse than those who are going with the fins attached. While the lack of fins can limit the number of cutbacks and carvings it will also allow the participant to spin in a 360-degree rotation.

Skurfing is quickly becoming the popular sport among teenagers and college students. A variety of transportation combinations are being tried by individuals throughout this sport. So how exactly does one skurf?

Before you start skurfing the first thing you need to do is understand exactly what you will be doing. You are in a sense riding a board while being pulled behind a boat. Once you understand this you can start skurfing by first practicing on land or in a calm body of water. Skurfing can be done on concrete or asphalt just the same as it can be done on the water.

If you are new to skurfing it can be very important to invest in the appropriate safety gear. This includes a helmet, knee or elbow pads and protective clothing. Safety gear is especially important if you are going to start skurfing on concrete before moving to the water. If you are going to start out in the water then you want to have a life preserver and a wet suit.

If you are going to start on land then you should start slow. Get pulled by either a bike or go-cart. At this time you can experiment with the riding options and have some fun trying out new moves. Once you are ready you can try out your moves on the water while being pulled by a boat or Jet Ski.

If you are a beginner it is always important to start slow. Rather than trying out the difficult tricks right away be sure to take the time to get a feel for your balance and the best position for your feet. Once you are ready you can try out the complicated tricks. Just remember that the key to skurfing is to keep up with your practice.
